about

"
The sea was calm, but we couldn’t say the same for our hearts. Carroll was at the helm of our small boat trying to make sense of our bearings, and Theodosia was counting what was left of our rations when I awoke. The wind wasn’t blowing, the sun was oppressive in the mid-day sky, and our compass was spinning. Theo’s red-rimmed eyes and sunburnt skin were a reflection of my own, Carrol’s too. It felt like the sun never left its perch directly above us for the past ten days, and our rations were all but gone.

I couldn’t sit up. My muscles felt like petrified wood. Theo sat next to me. Carroll’s back was to us when he reached out towards the sky. His frail arm stretched and his fingers folded into a fist. He slowly brought it towards his chest and rapped on his rib cage three times. Thump, thump, thump. The reverberations bounced off the flat sheet of glass that was the ocean around us and pulverized my eardrums. After the final thump, Carroll’s body crumpled into a heap on the deck.

My eyes closed languidly, my head tilted back, and Theo’s hand gently clasped mine. I forced my eyelids open and turned my gaze to her eyes for one last time. Her cracked lips pressed against mine. Our eyes closed. There was no movement, no sound except for the gentle lapping of the saltwater licking the side of our vessel.
